Yemanya -
Community Gardens
Yemanya
is a Champion Mom for Change and Community Garden Project Director who
teaches healthy eating and establishing community gardens. In
conjunction with Freedom Farm and sponsors, new Community Gardens are
currently being developed in the Sacramento, Solano, Yolo, and San
Joaquin Counties.
How it works:
1.
Suitable locations are determined (unused church, park, open space, and
city properties). Must have access to water supply. (Most lawns take
more water than a typical timer watered community garden.) A composting
area is a plus.
2. Freedom Farm
tills the soil in the spring and prepares it for planting. Soil
amendments, timed sprinkler systems, seeds and starter plants are
provided by sponsors.
3. Fruits and vegetables are planted,
cared for and harvested as crops ripen by registered
multi-generational/nationality volunteer participants.
4.
Harvest is divided among volunteers, land owners and needy families as
determined in advance between all participants. Typically a 50/50 split
between volunteers and land owners with each distributing to needy as
they see fit. (Many churches choose to donate to or run a food pantry
for the needy.)
5. Classes & tours on how to care for and grow healthy organic foods are available for groups.
